Ancillary Text - Poster.

For our initial poster we included a number of different images the aim of this was to create enigma for the narrative and promote the genre of the film. The main problem with this is that there was too much on the page and created confusion and were also unclear.

Due to these problems with the first poster we decided to create another to reach our full potential. The changes include adding in a black border this makes it more refined. We also added the production company, tag-line and the working title this is for advertising purposes. From analysing other posters we new to add a block of text naming the people who acted, produced and helped with the teaser trailer. We used photoshop to create the poster to edit images and add effects one of the main ones we used was blending the faces from one to the other.

Test Footage.

It was very important for us to check the lighting of outside would work and what time we would need to film, this did create problems as it was winters and the darkness came early but we worked around it. The aim was for it to appear as night but still at the same point needing the quality of the shots to be clear to the audience. We also needed to discover wether ambient sound of the woods would create any problems for the shots.

It was hard to find somewhere where we could film with a fire in the woods, so we decided to film it in a garden. This meant we needed to test wether it still looked realistic doing so.

We took plenty of different angles in the interior and exterior of the car, we weren't 100% sure wether we wanted to use a POV shot or not so we decided if we tested a range of shots we could decide what looked best. We also found the lighting was of a low standard once we had filmed it.

We needed to make sure that not only the bed shot was effective but also safe as her head was very close to the bed. It worked out this shot was extremely effective.

As the woods covered a very large area we weren't definite on where to shoot, so we tested different area's. We wanted trees and an open area which we found. We also needed to test for lighting within the woods.

Rough Cuts.

We found after our first time of shooting that the lighting shown on the camcorder is misleading, it looked fine then when we went to upload it to the computer it was too dark and unclear so not to the standard we would want for our trailer as the effect for the audience wouldn't be at its greatest.

Once again in this clip the lighting was far too dark and was unclear for the audience.

Not only in the mise-en-scene is there one of the actors in the background which ruins the shot completely the lightening is also far too bright as it doesn't create the dark, creepy effect we are wanting

When filming we always took other possibilities of shots into account and this is a good example of why. Although the framing and shot is perfectly acceptable we realized that if we took one from outside looking through the window it would be much more realistic as if someone was watching her.

This shot was too high so missed the character walking into the shot which we needed to show the change in time, although the lighting and sound were fine it wasn't what we were needing or the shot

Institutional Context

Like many of horror movies, Truth or Dare is a low budget movie. There are no well known actors, speacil effects and digital editng. This is similar to the british movie Donkey punch, they chose to use Warp X as their production company,   Warp X harnesses cutting edge digital technology and low budget production methods to make high value movies that can reach cinema audiences across the world. http://www.warpx.co.uk/about-us.asp.

Many films now use digital editing, to create great effect. computer graphic imagery is often added post production. This creates benefits both for the industry and audiences. Film distributers that market the movie will benefit as the cost will be significantly lower, due to this more people are able to creates movies which means there's more choice for audiences. For Donkey punch they used to distributer Optimum Releasing. There mantra is 'supporting filmmakers with a vision, and bringing these visions to the widest audience possible.' This would fit to our needs as were up and coming directors and would needs support with our vision to appeal to an audience.

Inter-Textual Links

After thoroughly looking at the common codes and conventions of movies we found some key points that we thought would work well with our ideas to create a high impact teaser trailer for our horror movie.

The idea of a mask is famously used in scream it creates a narrative enigma for the audience of who the killer could be.

Using a brunette haired girl as the antagonist is also used in many movies but the most recent 'Jennifer's Body' this showed the powerful and intimidating character which we wanted to create.
The certainty or having the film set in the woods was from the movie 'The strangers' I think this worked well as the woods are very open which makes the person feel intimidated and exposed.

'Cabin Fever' was not only set in the woods but also had a group of people going together we liked this idea because the differentiation between characters would appeal to a wider audience.

The link between past and present we found in films such as Black christmas and prom night. I think this gives some narrative of what's happened to the characters and possibilities of who the killer or victims could be in the present tense.

We copied a shot from the movie 'Taken' we used it because in the trailer created fear for the audience, and also you get to see the killer in the background and a close up to mid shot of the girl taken away

Another scene we noticed that was effective which was used in several movies was the bath scene, although we didn't want this shot to seem like the girl was getting killed the mise-en-scene gives the effects of a relaxed and peaceful scenario and then suddenly fear (climax). In the film 'What lies beneath' the main shocking scene is in the bath Bath Scene - (1.29). Another trailer that used a bath scene 'Nightmare on elm street 2010'

BBFC and Target Audience

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), originally British Board of Film Censors, is the organisation legally responsible for film classification within the United Kingdom.

We have chosen our movie to be a 15 due to the content. We studied the guidelines from bbfc and we thought 15 was the suitable rating.

Suitable only for those aged 15 and over.

Nobody younger than 15 can see a 15 film in a cinema. No-one younger than 15 can rent or buy a 15 rated VHS, DVD, Blu-ray Disc, UMD or game.
Gender.
The groups aim from the beginning of producing the movie was to appeal to both male and female although the cast is female dominated we added in a male to create not only depth to the story for possible chance of having relationship and its conflict in the story line. Although the female dominated cast could appeal to men even more so for the 'male gaze' different representations of women are explored this can create for women also as they can empathise and relate to them.
In analysing visual culture, the concept of The Gaze describes how the viewer gazes upon (views) the people presented and represented. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaze

Ethnicity.
Our teaser trailer includes an all caucasian cast, however i feel this will still appeal to a range of ethnic groups, not only because of the content within the movie but also that alot of mainstream productions do this and don't find problems with doing so commercially. Due to the all british cast and low budget film our target audience is only the UK therefore we live in a multicultural society so it wont be a shock to the culture

Socio-Economic Groupings.
Our target social class group is C1C2DE as most horrors are although this doesn't mean that the AB range cant watch it its just not specifically for them. Furthermore the cast within the film are acting in the role of that specific social class.
Age.
Our film represents a range of ages between 15 and 24 this is due to a number of reasons. Firstly the story-line and genre of the movie horrors generally appeal to a younger audience who are hoping for a scary Friday night, secondly the age of the cast are all younger from the youngest being 12 to the oldest member who is 18 so there is a range to appeal to a wider audience as they can relate to someone. On the other hand our film could attract a mature audience due to the films inter-textual references to classic horror movies such as 'A nightmare on elm street' and 'Halloween'

Nationality/Religion.
The entire cast is from the North of England, specifically west Yorkshire. Although you would stereotypically think of farmers and strong accents we chose to use cast members with an accent which which appeal to a wider audience.
